Sketchdump pg 18 The Babooa

When I'm about to fall asleep I tend to have images that flash through my mind. Kind of like a camera flash. Only instead of light I see a fleeting image. Sometimes it does that, but rapidly, like a slide show. And it was about a month ago that this monkey thing with a huge head/back of hair was climbing up this imaginary wall in my mind. It took a while for me to re-remember it. But after a few hours of brainstorming I got to start drawing it yesterday.

This would be a Bristle Back Babooa (Not baboon, pronounced ba-bu-ah). They have interlocking plated bumps on the bridge of their noses that are shaped/colored differently that work like fingerprints for people. The males of the species (indicated in this drawing) also are capable of inflating their sinuses much like a balloon as a display to show toughness or warrant the attention of a female. The hard plates serve as protection as well since there is little to no internal bone structure directly underneath the plates.

For some reason dad kept telling me that my top drawing looked like it was doing something suggestive to the what used to be disembodied head doodle of Babooa inflating his sinus pouch. A few reminders and much eye-rolling later I finally drew in the rest of the body...yup. My dad. Most mature guy in the world.

I had a lot of fun designing this species for some reason.
